At Maryland Tutoring Services, tutoring is more than just teaching - it’s mentorship, motivation, and transformation.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, a tutor is “a private teacher who teaches a single student or a very small group.”
But we see a tutor as much more than that: A role model, a guide, a mentor, and a personal trainer for the mind.
Over the years, we’ve seen firsthand how great tutoring can transform a student’s confidence, discipline, and academic performance.
That’s why we’ve developed a structured, evidence-based tutoring method that ensures every session builds understanding - not dependence.
We kick things off with a complimentary assessment to get a clear picture of each student’s strengths, habits, and areas that need attention.
This first meeting allows us to understand how the student learns best - whether they need a confidence boost, skill review, or advanced enrichment.
Based on the evaluation, we design a personalized learning plan built around each student’s goals, subjects, and learning style.
This plan outlines a clear route toward growth, helping students close gaps, master new skills, and build steady momentum toward success.
Once the plan is ready, learning begins!
Students meet one-on-one with our trained tutors - in-home, in-library, or online.

HERE ARE OUR STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS:
Ask the student what they have to work on: Students usually have an assignment they want to work on, but if not, you can ask them about what they are learning in class and construct your session accordingly.
Ask them to explain you what they understand/know about the topic they want to cover: This will allow you to see where they stand in terms of understanding the material, and it will help them better understand the material as well, as explaining something is usually the best way to understand it.
Ask them questions about what they just explained: Asking the definitions of any technical terms they may have used is always good because it will indicate the depth of their understanding. Most of the time, especially in Mathematics, students don’t even know the definitions of the terms they use so it is very important to clear any misconception or lack of understanding by evaluating the depth of their understanding.
Define all technical terms on paper before even using them in a sentence: This might seem trivial but it is crucially important, especially in scientific subjects because it establishes a clear communication rule between the tutor and the student.
Engage in a conversation with them and reason in different ways using those technical terms: This will lead to a better understanding of the applications of those concepts.
Jump into some study material or assignment they have from school and prompt them to reason and think critically: Remember that your role is to engage them in thinking critically and building their critical thinking skills and NOT dumping the answer on them, which actually hinders their understanding.
After you have finished covering all the definitions/concepts/applications of the subject at hand, it is then time to ask them questions on what they learned during the session: This will help recall the key concepts and allow them to explain it to you: Testing their own understanding.
To finish, The steps described above give a detailed approach on how to tutor in a one-on-one setting and how to best boost the critical thinking skills of any student. After reading this set of instructions, you are expected to understand that there is a big difference between the classical classroom teaching and personalized one-on-one tutoring, and that tutoring is a very powerful way of teaching.
